The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the recognition of four FSSAI-notified food testing laboratories across India for a period of six months. The decision was issued with the approval of the Competent Authority and reflects the regulator’s continued efforts to maintain strict compliance and quality standards within the national food testing ecosystem.
Laboratories Whose Recognition Has Been Suspended
The following laboratories have been temporarily suspended from conducting FSSAI-notified food testing activities:
- Intertek India Private Limited (Food Services), Gurgaon – FSSAI Registration No. 13/N/FSSAI/2014
- Italab (Goa) Pvt. Ltd., Goa – FSSAI Registration No. 34/W/FSSAI/2016
- Idma Laboratories Ltd., Panchkula – FSSAI Registration No. 44/N/FSSAI/2017
- Bureau Veritas India Testing Services Pvt. Ltd., Central Laboratory, Hyderabad – FSSAI Registration No. 16/S/FSSAI/2014
Among these, globally recognized organizations such as Intertek Group plc and Bureau Veritas are also empanelled with FSSAI as Third-Party Food Safety Audit Agencies and FoSTaC (Food Safety Training & Certification) Training Partners. Their involvement in regulatory audits and training programs makes this development particularly significant within the food safety community.
Significance of the Suspension
FSSAI-notified laboratories play a crucial role in India’s food safety framework. They are responsible for testing food samples for compliance with safety standards, detecting contaminants, verifying labeling claims, and supporting regulatory enforcement actions.
The temporary suspension of these laboratories underscores the regulator’s commitment to ensuring that all approved laboratories strictly adhere to required quality standards, accreditation norms, and operational protocols.
Impact on the Food Testing Ecosystem
The move sends a strong signal to laboratories, food businesses, and compliance professionals across the sector. It highlights that even internationally recognized testing organizations must maintain continuous compliance with FSSAI’s regulatory requirements.
For food businesses, this action reinforces the importance of selecting accredited and compliant laboratories for testing, documentation, and certification processes.
Strengthening Food Safety Compliance
Through such regulatory actions, FSSAI aims to strengthen transparency, reliability, and accountability in India’s food testing infrastructure. The suspension also serves as a reminder that adherence to quality assurance systems, regulatory guidelines, and audit requirements remains essential for maintaining recognition under the national food safety framework.
Overall, the development reflects FSSAI’s proactive approach to safeguarding the integrity of the food testing ecosystem and ensuring consumer safety across the country.
