India’s food safety regulator, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has intensified its drive against food adulteration, especially in milk and milk products. According to a recent press release issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), extensive enforcement and surveillance actions were carried out across the country during financial year 2024–25.

- 33,405 milk and milk product samples were analysed nationwide.
- 12,780 samples were found non-conforming with food safety standards.
- 12,057 cases were launched against defaulting Food Business Operators (FBOs).
These numbers highlight the scale of monitoring being conducted to ensure safe and quality food reaches consumers.
🧑⚖️ How Enforcement Works
Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, implementation is shared between the central government and state authorities.
- FSSAI sets science-based food standards and coordinates nationwide actions.
- State food safety departments are responsible for field-level inspections and enforcement.
Regular inspection drives, targeted surveillance, and sample testing are conducted throughout the year. When violations are found, regulatory and punitive actions can be taken against businesses found non-compliant.

To strengthen food safety systems, FSSAI conducts regular Central Advisory Committee (CAC) meetings involving state food safety commissioners. These discussions focus on:
