In a remarkable step toward sustainability, IIT Roorkee’s INNOPAP Lab, led by Prof. Vibhore Rastogi from the Department of Paper Technology, has developed biodegradable, compostable, and food-safe tableware made from wheat straw.
This innovation not only addresses plastic pollution and stubble burning, but also provides an avenue to boost farmers’ income. The initiative aligns with national missions such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Atmanirbhar Bharat, while supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) for responsible production and environmental sustainability.
Director Prof. K.K. Pant highlighted the innovation’s importance, emphasizing how it bridges scientific research with real-world societal impact. The project also celebrates the contributions of young researchers Jasmine Kaur and Dr. Rahul Ranjan, who played a key role in achieving this breakthrough.
The initiative is a collaborative effort involving Parason Machinery and German academic partners from the Dresden University of Technology (TUD) — including Mr. René Kleinert, Dr.-Ing. Roland Zelm, Ms. Lina Staffa, and Dr.-Ing. Roman Maletz. The industrial partner, Bionatic GmbH & Co. KG, represented by Mr. Frederik Feuerhahn, has also been instrumental in bringing the project closer to real-world application.
Funded by the Indo-German Science & Technology Centre (IGSTC 2+2), the project falls under the thematic area “Waste to Wealth and Sustainable Packaging.” This international partnership reflects the growing global commitment to finding innovative solutions for environmental challenges through science, technology, and collaboration.
