The Telangana government has announced plans to establish oil palm processing factories in every district; a move aimed at boosting farmers’ income and strengthening the state’s agricultural economy.
Agriculture Minister Thummala Nageswara Rao revealed that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy will inaugurate a major facility in Siddipet district later this month. The announcement came as Rao, along with Panchayat Raj Minister Danasari Anasuya (Seethakka), laid the foundation stone for a new oil palm processing unit at Incherla village in Mulugu district.
Highlighting Mulugu’s strong farming legacy, Rao said,
“I have been a farmer for 40 years and never faced any trouble in agriculture. Mulugu has been a hub for farming since the days of undivided Andhra Pradesh.”
Currently, oil palm is grown on 5,000 acres in Mulugu, with plans to expand cultivation by another 5,000 acres. The minister emphasized the need for awareness programmes to encourage farmers to adopt oil palm and other horticulture crops, which can yield better profits compared to traditional cultivation.
In addition to agriculture, Rao noted that Mulugu district is also being developed as a tourism hub, with the Karregutta region recently developed into a tourist corridor.
Push for Farmer Participation and Subsidies
Seethakka urged farmers to cultivate at least five acres of oil palm for steady returns, adding that those with 10 acres or more should take advantage of government subsidies. The state is supplying oil palm plants at a subsidized rate of ₹25 per plant, compared to the market price of ₹200.
IT Development in Mulugu
In a major boost beyond agriculture, Seethakka also announced that an IT company will soon be established in Mulugu district. IT Minister D Sridhar Babu is scheduled to inaugurate the office on August 18, with the government providing a permanent building for its operations.
This dual focus on agriculture and technology is expected to open new avenues for growth in Mulugu and set an example for integrated rural development across Telangana.
