In a major push to modernise the dairy sector, the West Bengal government has inaugurated a high-capacity milk processing plant in Nadia, aimed at boosting rural incomes and strengthening the state’s dairy value chain.
The facility, launched by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, will operate under the Banglar Dairy brand and has a processing capacity of 1.5 lakh litres of milk per day. The project is a key part of the state’s long-term strategy to support dairy farmers through better infrastructure and organised market access.
“This plant will ensure fair prices for our farmers and clean milk for consumers, linking rural prosperity with urban food security,” an official said at the inauguration.
Supporting Farmers and Urban Consumers
The new dairy unit will process surplus milk collected from local cooperatives, helping reduce wastage while ensuring stable procurement for small and marginal dairy farmers. By improving chilling, hygiene, and processing standards, the plant is expected to meet rising urban demand for safe and high-quality dairy products.
Transparent procurement systems are also set to minimise the role of intermediaries, ensuring timely and fair payments to farmers across Nadia and nearby districts.
Employment and Skill Development
Beyond milk processing, the facility is expected to generate direct and indirect employment in operations, quality control, logistics, and marketing. Special focus is being placed on opportunities for rural youth and women.
The state government plans to integrate the project with vocational training and cooperative development programmes, providing hands-on exposure to modern dairy practices.
Strengthening Dairy Infrastructure
The Nadia plant is part of a broader initiative to revitalise the dairy sector in eastern India through cooperative-led models and decentralised milk processing. It is designed to stabilise milk supply chains against seasonal fluctuations and market volatility.
With growing consumer demand for clean, traceable, and value-added dairy products, Banglar Dairy is expected to expand its footprint across West Bengal and potentially enter new markets in the future.
