The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center is looking for a competent, self-motivated, and dynamic candidate to join as the IRS – Water and climate specialist.
The incumbent will work across different work packages of the CGIAR’s MITIGATE+ initiative in Bangladesh as well as six other countries covered by the initiative.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Contribute to country reports and literature reviews on climate, food and land national strategies and policies on aspects related to land and water-based mitigation.
- Generate country-specific data on emissions linked to water and food systems (reservoirs, rice fields, groundwater pumping, wetlands) using country statistics, life cycle inventory data, etc.
- Analyze water-carbon tradeoffs in different crop & management systems.
- Conduct reviews to identify data gaps, assess water adaptation strategies, etc.
- Use a combination of modelling and field measurements in selected countries to generate tier 2 emission factors.
- Conduct time sequence analysis to understand changes in GHG emissions.
- Coordinate IWMI’s data collection work in Bangladesh or other focus countries and lead/contribute to relevant activities as needed through designing and implementing research, liaising with partners, hiring and managing consultants, conducting interviews and workshops, etc.
- Publish journal articles, reports, and blogs highlighting IWMI’s contribution and findings within the MITIGATE+ initiative.
Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- A PhD in environmental engineering, civil engineering, environmental sciences, water management or related field is required.
- A minimum of 5 years of work experience on water and climate change is required.
- Track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Experience of working in interdisciplinary and multicultural teams.
- Willingness to travel.
- Experience with the IPCC methodology for emissions calculation and knowledge of the principles of hydrology is required.
- Familiarity with creating and using life cycle inventories is required, knowledge of carbon footprint, water footprint or life cycle analysis methodologies are desirable.
- Up-to-date knowledge of the water adaptation and mitigation approaches and challenges.
- Experience in water resources modelling and managing large climate data sets.
- Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines and work independently and cooperatively with team members.
- Experience in using Earth Observation / Remote Sensing tools is desirable.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Excellent analytical skills.
- Ability to write and communicate clearly.
- Fluency in English is required, knowledge of other regional languages is an asset.
