In a major push towards improving food safety monitoring, the Haryana government has announced the deployment of 28 Mobile Food Testing Laboratory (MFTL) vans across districts falling under the National Capital Region (NCR). The initiative is part of a broader plan to modernize testing infrastructure and provide faster, scientific, and accessible food testing services to citizens.
The project comes under a ₹53.21 crore infrastructure upgrade aimed at strengthening food and drug safety systems in the state. These mobile labs will allow authorities to conduct on-spot checks of food samples such as milk, sweets, edible oils, and other commonly consumed items — helping reduce food adulteration and improve consumer confidence.
What Are Mobile Food Testing Labs?
Mobile food testing labs are specially equipped vans that function as mini laboratories on wheels. They are designed to reach markets, public gatherings, and remote areas where permanent testing facilities may not be easily available.
According to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, these units — often called “Food Safety on Wheels” — are used for:
- On-the-spot food quality checks
- Detecting adulteration in common food products
- Creating consumer awareness about food safety
- Supporting sample collection for detailed lab analysis
- Training food vendors and improving hygiene practices
They also help authorities spread awareness about safe food handling and basic hygiene standards among consumers and food businesses.
Key Highlights of the Haryana Initiative
Here’s what the new plan includes:
- 28 mobile testing vans to be deployed in NCR districts
- Modernisation of the District Food Laboratory in Karnal
- Upgraded microbiology facilities and advanced testing equipment
- Expansion of high-quality food testing infrastructure
- Increased access to testing for citizens and regulators
Officials say the move will make food testing faster and more accessible, helping authorities monitor food quality more effectively — especially in high-population areas within NCR.
Bigger Food Safety Plan in Haryana
The mobile labs are part of a larger food safety strategy that includes:
- Establishment of eight advanced food testing laboratories in phases
- Development of Clean Street Food Hubs in cities like Ambala, Karnal, Hisar, and Gurugram
- Strengthening enforcement and inspection mechanisms
The state currently has two notified food testing labs, both recognized under food safety regulations, and the new expansion aims to significantly widen testing coverage.
Why This Matters
Food adulteration and unsafe handling remain major concerns in crowded urban markets. Mobile labs help bridge the gap by:
✔️ Bringing testing closer to consumers
✔️ Speeding up detection of unsafe food items
✔️ Increasing visibility of food safety checks in public spaces
✔️ Encouraging vendors to maintain hygiene standards
With NCR witnessing high food consumption and dense markets, regular mobile testing is expected to improve compliance and public awareness.
The deployment of 28 mobile food testing labs signals a strong step toward safer, scientifically monitored food systems in Haryana’s NCR region. By combining mobile testing, upgraded laboratories, and stricter monitoring, the state aims to ensure that safer food reaches more citizens while discouraging adulteration at the ground level.
