Central government has constituted a committee to check whether the regulation of nutraceuticals under the control of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) in order to better control the health related products, according to reports.
At present, the regulation of nutraceuticals and related products are under the aegis of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), which mainly addresses the food and beverages products in the country. While nutraceuticals are also covered under the regulations related to FSSAI, the government has observed that there is a chance of interchangeable use of the same ingredient for pharma products also, according to an agency report.
In a recent meeting related to this, the government has formed a committee under the chairmanship of secretary of the ministry of health and family welfare and the secretary of Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Ayush, ministry of food processing industries, CEO of FSSAI, Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research among others, as members.
The experts noted that the health supplements such as vitamins, minerals and probiotics have therapeutic usage and some of the companies are already shifting the approval process from the CDSCO to FSSAI for approval. Some of the companies are also claiming disease risk reduction owing to the use of their products, which also has to come under scrutiny.
The panel is expected to explore the feasibility of regulating these nutraceuticals and its formats in food and drugs, and whether it has to be brought under the control of the CDSCO. It may also look at putting price control on some of these categories and implementing good manufacturing practices, among other regulations akin to drugs.
