The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) organized a Sectoral Stakeholder Consultation on Antibiotic Residues at FDA Bhawan, New Delhi, reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding public health through science-based regulatory reforms.
The consultation witnessed participation from over 70 stakeholders, including representatives from government departments, Food Business Operator (FBO) associations, regulatory experts, laboratories, and members of the food industry. The session served as a collaborative platform to deliberate on policy implementation, compliance mechanisms, and monitoring frameworks concerning antibiotic residues in food products.
🔎 Key Highlights of the Consultation
1️⃣ Review of Veterinary Drugs under FSS Regulations
Stakeholders discussed the review and strengthening of provisions under the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2011, particularly in relation to veterinary drug residues in animal-derived foods.
2️⃣ Framework for Labelling of Animal-Derived Foods
Proposals were deliberated to develop a regulatory framework for labelling animal-derived food products with respect to antibiotic usage, enhancing consumer transparency and informed choices.
