In a major enforcement action, the Food Safety Department of Madhya Pradesh has sealed an illegally operating food unit in Indore. The operation was carried out after officials discovered that the establishment was functioning without the mandatory FSSAI license, a violation that carries serious health and regulatory implications.
According to authorities, the raid led to the seizure of approximately 900 kg of fennel seeds and 400 kg of poppy seeds stored under questionable conditions. The large quantity of raw food material raised concerns about the potential for distribution into the open market without verification of safety or quality standards.
Officials said that the unit failed to provide basic documentation related to sourcing, hygiene, and processing protocols. Preliminary inspections also indicated non-compliance with standard storage practices, such as proper containment and moisture control—both critical to preventing contamination in spices and seeds.
The sealed unit has now been placed under investigation. Samples from the seized items have been sent for laboratory analysis to determine adulteration, contamination, or any other violation of food safety norms.
A senior Food Safety Officer stated that such crackdowns are part of a broader exercise to ensure that unlicensed and unsafe food businesses are identified and acted upon. “Strict enforcement is essential for protecting consumers and ensuring only compliant operators are allowed to function,” the officer added.
The Food Safety Department has reiterated that all food businesses—regardless of scale—must acquire a valid FSSAI license and follow hygiene and operational protocols as per the Food Safety and Standards Act.
This latest action highlights the growing vigilance across Madhya Pradesh, particularly in cities like Indore, where food manufacturing, packaging, and distribution units have expanded rapidly. Authorities emphasized that more inspections will follow, targeting both licensed and unlicensed units to ensure public health remains safeguarded.
