In a significant move to integrate India’s ancient health wisdom with modern food regulation, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), in consultation with the Ministry of Ayush, has released a definitive list of “Ayurveda Aahara” products under Category A.
The announcement follows the introduction of the Food Safety and Standards (Ayurveda Aahara) Regulations, 2022, and aims to bring greater regulatory clarity, consumer trust, and industry guidance to Ayurveda-based nutrition.
Bringing Classical Ayurveda into Mainstream Nutrition
The newly released list is based on classical Ayurvedic formulations drawn from authoritative texts listed in Schedule A. Issued under Note (1) of Schedule B, this list affirms the authenticity of these traditional preparations and offers Food Business Operators (FBOs) a reliable reference to manufacture Ayurveda Aahara products in compliance with regulatory norms.
“This initiative not only empowers Food Business Operators with much-needed clarity but also strengthens consumer trust in Ayurveda-based nutrition,” said Shri Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush.
To facilitate innovation while preserving authenticity, FSSAI has also opened the door for future additions to the list. FBOs can submit requests with references from classical Ayurvedic texts for consideration and approval.
A Step Toward Preventive Health and Sustainability
At the announcement, Union Minister Shri Prataprao Jadhav, Minister of State (IC), Ministry of Ayush & Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, urged citizens to adopt Ayurveda Aahara for long-term health benefits.
“In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, adopting Ayurveda Aahara is a meaningful step toward preventive healthcare and a balanced, sustainable way of living,” said the Minister.
Ayurveda Aahara is rooted in the principles of balance, seasonal eating, and natural ingredients with therapeutic properties. These preparations are tailored to nourish the body, enhance immunity, aid digestion, and promote overall wellness.
Scientific Validation and Industry Support
Prof. Sanjeev Sharma, Vice-Chancellor of the National Institute of Ayurveda (Deemed University), highlighted the scientific rigor behind this move. Under the guidance of the Ministry of Ayush, traditional Ayurvedic formulations have been decoded, curated, and validated to ensure they meet modern regulatory and scientific standards.
This effort also forms the basis of the Ayush Aahara Compendium, which will serve as a guiding document for food manufacturers and help the public access safe, authentic, and time-tested dietary solutions.
Aligning Tradition with the Future
Ayurveda Aahara is more than just a dietary choice — it’s part of a larger shift toward sustainable and preventive health practices. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated at World Food India 2023, “Just as Yoga has reached every corner of the world, Millets and Ayurveda Aahara will also gain global acceptance in the years ahead.”
With this initiative, India takes a definitive step in bringing its traditional food wisdom to the forefront of global wellness trends.
