Army Rejects Verka Milk Powder Shipment Over Quality Concerns

In a recent development, the Indian Army has rejected a large consignment of Verka whole milk powder supplied by Punjab’s dairy cooperative, Milkfed. The decision came after quality tests found the product did not meet the required standards.

According to officials, around 125 metric tonnes of milk powder sent to an Army unit in Jammu was turned down. A sample of the product was tested by the Food Inspection Organisation, and it reportedly failed not once but twice. The issue was linked to the presence of extraneous, thread-like particles in the powder, making it non-compliant.

Milkfed, however, has maintained that this is an isolated incident. The organization stated that it follows strict quality checks at every stage—from raw material to final product. Officials also suggested that the contamination could have happened during packaging or handling rather than production. A fact-finding committee has now been set up, and further testing will be carried out to understand what went wrong.

This incident is significant because Milkfed supplies dairy products worth nearly ₹100 crore annually to the Army, making it one of its key clients. Naturally, the rejection has raised concerns not just within the supply chain but also among political leaders, who are now demanding a detailed investigation and accountability.

While Milkfed continues to stand by its quality standards, the situation highlights how even a single lapse can impact trust—especially when it comes to food supplied to critical institutions like the armed forces.
