The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed State Food Safety Commissioners and Regional Directors to conduct nationwide enforcement and surveillance drives on spices throughout October.
The month-long drive will focus on both whole and powdered spices, checking them for safety, quality, and compliance with labelling requirements. Authorities will also identify hotspots of adulteration and non-compliance in the Indian spice market.
According to FSSAI’s notice, the enforcement will specifically cover:
- Black Pepper (whole & powder)
- Cardamom (whole & powder)
- Chilli (whole & powder)
- Cinnamon (Dalchini) whole
- Coriander (whole & powder)
- Cumin (whole & powder)
- Turmeric (whole & powder)
“The inspection and sampling of spices must be carried out in accordance with the provisions of the FSS Act, Rules, and Regulations. The drive shall be limited to manufacturing units only, to ensure compliance at the source,” the notice stated.
All collected samples will be sent to NABL-accredited laboratories with full testing capabilities under relevant food safety standards. Data from inspections and test results must be uploaded on FoSCoS / FoSCoRIS, with a consolidated report to be submitted to FSSAI by November 20, 2025.
The latest directive follows a similar exercise carried out between November 2024 and February 2025, which revealed several instances of non-compliance related to quality, contaminants, microbial load, and labelling. Action was initiated against defaulters.
By renewing the focus on spices, FSSAI aims to strengthen consumer confidence and tighten enforcement in one of India’s most vital food sectors.
