A major food safety raid in Moradabad has exposed a shocking fake desi egg operation running in plain sight. The UP Food Safety Department seized over 4.5 lakh chemically coloured eggs, originally plain white farm eggs painted to look like premium desi eggs.
Officials said the gang used a mix of tea dust residue and sindoor to create the brown dye before pushing the eggs into the market at nearly double the price. The racket posed serious health risks, with no safety standards followed at the unit.
The unit was traced to a warehouse owned by Allah Khan in Barwada Majhra near Rampur Tiraha under Katghar police limits. After days of surveillance, teams moved in early Thursday when a fresh consignment of nearly 80k to 1 lakh eggs arrived.
Inside the godown, authorities found piles of coloured eggs, thousands more ready for dyeing, chemical bottles and other equipment. Around 4.53 lakh dyed eggs valued at ₹3.9 lakh were seized and the premises were immediately sealed.
Officials confirmed strict action will be taken under the Food Adulteration Act, calling the raid a reminder of why constant vigilance in food safety is crucial.
