Bhubaneswar | In a strategic move to promote regional cuisine and tourism, the Odisha Government has unveiled plans to financially support the launch of authentic Odia restaurants across key Indian cities under its Tourism Policy 2026.
The initiative will see the government extend financial assistance of up to ₹5 crore to private investors and entrepreneurs for establishing restaurants dedicated to Odia cuisine.
Phase-Wise Expansion Plan
In the first phase, the government aims to set up nearly 20 restaurants across four metropolitan hubs:
Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai, with up to five outlets planned in each city.
Additionally, popular tourist destinations such as Agra, Varanasi, Goa, Kochi, and Jaipur will host up to two restaurants each in subsequent phases.
Structured Financial Support
The funding will be disbursed in stages to ensure sustainability:
- 50% after one year of operations
- Remaining 50% split across the second and third years
The policy distinguishes between investments within and outside Odisha:
- Within Odisha: Includes costs for interiors, furnishing, kitchen equipment, and renovation
- Outside Odisha: Covers furnishing, interiors, and kitchen setup
Operational Incentives
To ease operational burdens, the government is also offering:
- Double electricity bill reimbursement in the first year
- Electricity and SGST reimbursement in years two and three
However, total reimbursements will be capped at ₹2 lakh per month per restaurant.
Showcasing Odisha’s Culinary Heritage
These restaurants will spotlight Odisha’s rich and diverse food culture, featuring:
- Temple cuisine inspired by traditions of Jagannath Temple
- Coastal and tribal dishes
- Traditional delicacies like Chhena Poda
- Staples such as Dalma and Pakhala Bhata
Despite their cultural depth, many of these dishes remain underrepresented in India’s mainstream food scene.
A Boost to Local Economy and Supply Chains
Industry experts believe that if these ventures maintain consistent quality and adhere to food safety standards, the initiative could evolve into a scalable restaurant chain or franchise model across India.
Moreover, as Odia cuisine relies heavily on locally sourced ingredients, the move is expected to strengthen agricultural and supply ecosystems within Odisha, creating a ripple effect for farmers and small producers.
