In a major boost to industrial development in the North East, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the region’s largest PepsiCo bottling plant in Mendipathar, North Garo Hills, on Wednesday.
Spread over 37 acres in the Mendipathar industrial area, the plant has been set up by Varun Beverages with an investment of ₹340 crore. The facility is expected to generate employment for nearly 500 people and will handle the production and distribution of various PepsiCo products, including fruit-based beverages.
Calling it a “symbol of economic growth,” CM Sangma highlighted the plant’s role in unlocking job opportunities and boosting local livelihoods. “This project is a blessing for our state,” he said. “It will directly and indirectly benefit thousands across the region.”
The Chief Minister acknowledged that the Mendipathar industrial area had been a long-awaited promise, conceptualized in the 1990s but without any significant investment for over three decades. Paying tribute to his late father, former Lok Sabha Speaker P.A. Sangma, the CM said, “There was hope and expectation, which never got fulfilled – until now.”
He also extended gratitude to the local Nokma and the people of Mendipathar for donating land for industrial development nearly 30 years ago.
The event was attended by several dignitaries including Deputy Speaker Timothy D Shira, Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal, PHE Minister Marcuise Marak, MIDC Chairman James K Sangma, and other MLAs.
The CM also announced a second bottling plant in Tikrikilla-Bajengdoba, which is already 90% complete. He praised the leadership of Varun Beverages Chairman Ravikant Jaipuria and Varun Jaipuria for their commitment and efficiency. “Though the target was nine months, the plant was completed in just 11 months – an impressive feat,” he said.
With this milestone, Meghalaya is poised for a new phase of industrial and economic development, fulfilling a long-pending dream of transforming Garo Hills into a regional growth hub.
