Kerry Group, a global leader in taste and nutrition, has officially opened its first taste manufacturing facility in Rwanda, marking a major milestone in its East African expansion strategy. The facility, located in Kigali, aims to serve local food and beverage manufacturers by delivering high-quality ingredients and innovative taste solutions tailored to regional preferences.
Supporting Growth in Africa’s Food Industry
This investment is part of Kerry’s ambitious €1 billion commitment to emerging markets, designed to accelerate growth and drive sustainability across the global food sector. The Kigali plant is a key step in Kerry’s vision to bring sustainable, nutritious, and delicious food to African consumers while boosting local economies.
“The establishment of this facility in Rwanda marks a significant step towards realising our vision to bring delicious and nutritious products, produced with world-class quality, to millions of African consumers,” said Jad Neaime, General Manager, Kerry Africa.
“As the only global taste and nutrition solutions company producing in East Africa, we aim to partner with local businesses to solve their unique challenges and help them grow.”
A Strategic Presence in East Africa
Kerry’s new site in Rwanda expands its East African footprint, complementing its existing innovation hub in Kenya (established in 2018) and its broader network of seven manufacturing sites across Africa—including locations in Tanzania, Uganda, Cameroon, South Africa, and Nigeria, with sales offices in Lagos and Nairobi.
Sustainable and Locally-Focused Facility
The Kigali facility reflects Kerry’s sustainability goals with features like:
- Zero waste to landfill
- Energy-efficient utility equipment
- Fit-for-purpose wastewater treatment system
Beyond environmental impact, Kerry is also investing in local talent and supply chains. This includes building partnerships with local producers, sourcing ingredients locally, and providing training and employment opportunities for Rwandans.
“Rwanda’s fast-growing economy and vibrant food processing sector made it a natural choice,” Neaime added.
“This facility enables us to localize our operations further, support economic development, and be closer to our customers.”
Launch Attended by Key Stakeholders
The opening ceremony was attended by dignitaries from the Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), local universities, major manufacturers, and the Deputy Head of Mission to Uganda and Rwanda from the Embassy of Ireland, Jill Clements.
