New Delhi, October 15, 2025:
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has officially withdrawn its previous orders that restricted the use of the term “ORS” (Oral Rehydration Solution) on product labels and in brand names.
According to the latest directive issued on October 14, 2025, all earlier restrictions related to the use of “ORS” have now been quashed, allowing Food Business Operators (FBOs) to freely use the term on relevant food and hydration products.
This decision marks a major clarification for companies in the nutrition and hydration sector, removing previous regulatory uncertainty surrounding the use of the “ORS” term.
Compliance Reminder: Supreme Court Order on Advertising
In connection with the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s Order dated May 7, 2024 (WPC No. 645 of 2022 – Indian Medical Association & Anr. vs. Union of India & Ors.), FSSAI has also reminded all Food Business Operators to comply with new advertising declaration norms aimed at curbing misleading advertisements and protecting consumer interests.
As per the Court’s directives:
- Advertisers and advertising agencies must submit a Self-Declaration Certificate before publishing or airing any advertisement.
- This certificate confirms that the advertisement does not violate the Advertising Code under the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994.
- The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has enabled this feature on the Broadcast Seva Portal (for TV and Radio) and on the Press Council of India’s portal (for print, digital, and internet platforms).
- These portals have been operational since June 4, 2024.
FSSAI has advised all Food Business Operators to ensure strict compliance with these directives to avoid regulatory action.
