The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has withdrawn its 2022 notification that set a high copper limit for Hops Pellets used in beer production.
In its latest order, the regulator has directed food businesses to comply with the standard copper limit of 30 mg/kg for Hops Pellets under the “foods not specified” category in the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins, and Residues) Regulations, 2011. This is a significant reduction from the earlier limit of 1,000 ppm (1,000 mg/kg) allowed in 2022.
The earlier notification was issued after the Trade and International Cooperation Division received representations highlighting that Hops Pellets are used in beer manufacturing and not for direct human consumption. Based on European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) standards, the 2022 order had set the maximum permissible copper content in dried Hops, including pellets and un-concentrated powder, at 1,000 ppm.
With the withdrawal of the earlier order, all imported consignments of Hops Pellets will now need to meet the much stricter 30 mg/kg limit in line with other FSSAI standards.
