In a major crackdown on food safety violations, officials from the Food Safety and Legal Metrology Departments raided 40 popular sweet shops and bakeries across Visakhapatnam on Saturday, August 2. The coordinated operation involved nearly 20 inspection teams deployed across various areas of the city.
The raids focused on assessing hygiene standards, food storage practices, and the usage of raw materials in kitchens. Officials found several alarming violations during the inspections. Expired food products were being used in some establishments, while others were serving items without proper expiry labels.
Speaking on the findings, Joint Food Controller N. Poornachandra Rao stated that 39 food samples were collected and sent for laboratory testing. “Notices have been served to 10 shops for failing to meet hygiene standards. We have booked 16 cases against outlets found using expired sauces, raw materials, and unlabeled products. Criminal charges may follow, depending on test results,” he said.
This is the second consecutive day of food safety enforcement in the city. On August 1, similar raids were conducted at restaurants and eateries, leading to 17 cases being registered for hygiene-related violations.
Authorities have confirmed that such inspections will continue in the coming days as part of a citywide initiative to ensure food safety and consumer protection.
