In a major food safety enforcement action, the Rajasthan Food Safety Department destroyed nearly 1.5 lakh kilograms of expired Amul non-dairy products in Jaipur after officials discovered that a distributor allegedly attempted to erase expiry dates and print new ones to sell the products in the market.
Complaint Triggered Investigation
The action began after a complaint was received on the 181 government helpline, alleging that a warehouse in Kho Nagorian, Jaipur operated by Messrs Athlete Distributor was preparing to sell expired food products. Acting on the complaint, a team from the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Jaipur II conducted an inspection at the warehouse.
Large Quantity of Expired Products Found
During the inspection, officials discovered thousands of cartons containing Amul-branded non-dairy products, including:
- Noodles
- Ketchup
- Mayonnaise
- Energy drinks
The products were reportedly manufactured by Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd., Gujarat and supplied by Advansys India Private Limited.
Authorities revealed that around 12,000 cartons contained expired products, while in approximately 3,000 cartons the expiry dates had allegedly been erased.
Chemicals Used to Erase Expiry Dates
Inspection teams also recovered thinner, acetone, and other chemicals at the warehouse, which were allegedly used to remove the printed expiry dates from product packaging.
Officials stated that the distributor was planning to print new expiry dates, repack the products into around 4,500 new Amul-branded cartons, and sell them for profit.
Expired Goods Transported in 27 Trucks
Due to the massive quantity of seized food products, the destruction process lasted four days. The expired items were loaded into 27 trucks and transported to a garbage disposal site, where they were destroyed at the expense of the firm.
Distributor Learned Method from YouTube
According to officials, the businessman admitted during questioning that he had learned the method of changing expiry dates on packaged goods from YouTube. Authorities were shocked by the scale of the operation and the attempt to reintroduce expired products into the market.
Warehouse Sealed, License Expired
Food Safety Commissioner Dr. T. Shubhamangala stated that the warehouse had been sealed, and food business operations of the distributor have been banned until further investigation.
Officials also confirmed that the food license of Messrs Athlete Store had already expired, and neighbours had reported suspicious activities at the warehouse, where workers reportedly entered in the morning and the gate remained closed until evening.
Legal Action Under Food Safety Act
Authorities have issued notices to the involved firms and initiated action under the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), 2006. The distributor faces multiple charges, including:
- Storing expired food products
- Attempting to sell products by altering expiry dates
- Operating without a valid food license
- Violating instructions issued by food safety officers
Officials stated that further legal proceedings will follow after the investigation is completed.
