In a significant step towards sustainable packaging, SIG has launched the world’s first 1-litre aseptic carton pack made from its Terra alu-free and full barrier material—completely eliminating the need for aluminum while maintaining full product protection. German retailer ALDI is now offering its Rio d’oro grape juice in this groundbreaking packaging format.
This new aseptic carton, made from over 80% paper, replaces the traditional aluminum layer with an ultra-thin polymer coating that safeguards the contents from oxygen, light, and moisture. According to SIG, this innovation slashes the number of raw materials used from three to two and can reduce the carbon footprint of multi-serve aseptic cartons by up to 61% when combined with forest-based polymers.
Initial production and filling are being carried out at Quargentan, an Italian food and beverage producer, using existing SIG Midi 12 Aseptic filling lines—proving the material’s seamless compatibility with current manufacturing setups. The shelf life remains unchanged at up to 12 months, with full barrier performance intact.
The alu-free solution is now available globally and supports high-speed filling—up to 24,000 packs/hour for small cartons and 15,000 packs/hour for larger formats. ALDI’s switch to this carton for its Rio d’oro brand also offers a 29% carbon footprint reduction compared to traditional multi-serve cartons.
SIG, which introduced the format in May, aims to expand the Terra alu-free material across all flagship aseptic carton formats for beverage and dairy categories worldwide.
The move comes amid a growing industry push for eco-conscious packaging. Just last month, Elopak, OHPC, and Dow announced a similar initiative using recycled and renewable polymers in their cartons.
With this innovation, SIG continues to lead the way in making aseptic packaging more sustainable—without compromising performance or convenience.
