The National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management‑Kundli (NIFTEM-K) has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, to strengthen academic and research collaboration in the field of food science and technology. The institute, which functions under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), Government of India, aims to expand global cooperation and innovation in the agri-food sector through this partnership.
The MoU was formally signed by **Harinder Singh Oberoi, Director of NIFTEM-K, and **Baljit Singh, Vice President (Research) at the University of Saskatchewan. The signing ceremony was attended by several dignitaries including **Scott Moe, Premier of Saskatchewan, **Avinash Joshi, Secretary of MoFPI, and D. Praveen, Joint Secretary of MoFPI, highlighting the strategic importance of the collaboration between India and Canada in the agri-food domain.
This partnership also supports the recently announced Centre of Excellence in Pulse Protein, a joint initiative between India and Canada unveiled in the presence of the Prime Ministers of both countries. The Centre will be jointly led by NIFTEM-K from India and the University of Saskatchewan from Canada, focusing on innovation and research in pulse-based proteins.
Under the five-year agreement, the institutions will work together to develop online teaching and training programs in food science and technology, food systems economics, and business development. The collaboration will also facilitate short-term exchange programs for faculty members, researchers, and students, providing opportunities to learn from global best practices in food processing and innovation.
The MoU further outlines cooperation in joint research projects, collaborative funding proposals, and integrated degree programs in Food Processing Technology. Both institutions will also organize joint seminars, workshops, academic exchanges, and industry-oriented short courses aimed at strengthening research, innovation, and skill development in the food sector.
Leaders from both institutions noted that the collaboration is expected to drive innovation, strengthen food processing value chains, and contribute to sustainable food systems in both countries. By combining the University of Saskatchewan’s globally recognized agrifood research ecosystem with NIFTEM-K’s role as a key driver of India’s food processing sector, the partnership aims to support technology-driven solutions and research-based industrial growth.
The MoU represents another important step in NIFTEM-K’s efforts to expand its international footprint and reinforce India’s leadership in food technology, entrepreneurship, and management through strong global partnerships.
