In a landmark development for agricultural trade, India and Australia have signed a Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) for organic products. The agreement is expected to simplify compliance requirements for organic trade, making it easier for certified organic produce to move seamlessly between the two countries.
The MRA will boost bilateral agri-trade, reduce duplication in certification processes, and create new opportunities for farmers, exporters, and businesses in both nations. By recognizing each other’s organic certification standards, India and Australia aim to build greater trust and efficiency in organic food exports and imports.
Officials highlighted that this step will not only strengthen trade ties but also support India’s vision of becoming the “Organic Food Basket of the World.” With rising global demand for chemical-free, sustainably grown food, Indian farmers and exporters are set to gain wider access to international markets.
Australia, known for its stringent organic standards, is a key trading partner in the Asia-Pacific region. The MRA will enhance cooperation, encourage innovation in organic farming, and contribute to sustainable growth in the agriculture sector.
Industry experts believe this move will also encourage small and medium farmers in India to adopt organic practices, given the expanding export opportunities and reduced compliance hurdles.
This partnership between India and Australia marks a significant stride towards promoting healthy, sustainable, and globally competitive organic food systems.
