The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has clarified that eggs available in the Indian market are safe for human consumption, dismissing recent claims linking egg consumption to cancer as misleading and scientifically unsupported.
In an official statement issued on Saturday, the country’s food safety regulator said that social media posts and reports alleging the presence of carcinogenic substances in eggs have no scientific basis and risk creating unnecessary panic among consumers. FSSAI urged the public to rely only on verified scientific evidence and official advisories when assessing food safety concerns.
The clarification comes amid claims that eggs contain nitrofuran metabolites such as AOZ, substances that are considered potentially carcinogenic. Addressing these allegations, FSSAI officials reiterated that nitrofurans are strictly banned at all stages of poultry and egg production in India under the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2011.
According to the regulator, food safety officers across the country regularly conduct surveillance and testing of both branded and unbranded eggs to ensure compliance with prescribed safety standards. Any violation detected during inspections attracts strict regulatory action.
FSSAI emphasized that eggs remain a nutritious and affordable source of high-quality protein, vitamins, and essential minerals, and continue to be a valuable part of a balanced diet when produced and consumed in accordance with food safety regulations.
The authority once again appealed to consumers to avoid misinformation circulating online and to trust assessments issued by statutory bodies responsible for safeguarding public health.
