Roasted chickpeas are widely consumed across India and are generally seen as a healthy snack. However, consumers are being warned to stay alert—especially if the chickpeas appear unnaturally bright yellow. Such colour can be a sign of dangerous chemical adulteration, making the food unfit for human consumption.
In a major action, the Food Department in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, seized 750 sacks of adulterated roasted chickpeas during a raid conducted on Monday. Acting on secret information, officials carried out the operation at a warehouse under Rajghat police station jurisdiction.
According to officials, the chickpeas were transported from Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Laboratory tests revealed that the chickpeas were treated with synthetic yellow dye, a chemical typically used for dyeing clothes and colouring paper, not for food.
Health experts warn that consumption of such chemically treated food items can lead to serious health issues, including liver and kidney damage, and may even increase the risk of cancer if consumed over time. The use of such dyes is strictly prohibited under food safety laws.
What consumers should watch out for
- Avoid chickpeas or snacks with excessively bright or unnatural colours
- Buy food items only from trusted and licensed vendors
- Report suspicious food products to local food safety authorities
The Food Department has stated that further investigation is underway and strict action will be taken against those involved in the adulteration network.
