As mango season kicks off and fresh stocks begin arriving in Hyderabad markets, authorities have intensified action against the use of illegal and unsafe ripening methods.
In a joint effort, police and municipal officials conducted inspections across the city on April 4 and 5, targeting warehouses and wholesale fruit traders suspected of using harmful chemicals.
⚠️ Traders Arrested for Using Excess Ripening Agents
During the operation, at least two wholesale fruit traders were arrested for allegedly using excessive quantities of chemical ripening agents. One trader operating from Chudi Bazar was found using a product called “Diamond Ripe Ethylene” in unsafe amounts.
Officials from the Hyderabad Food Adulteration Surveillance Team (H-FAST) confirmed that over two dozen sachets of the ripening agent were seized during the raid.
🍋 7 Tons of Mangoes Seized
Authorities also confiscated nearly 7 tons of mangoes from multiple warehouses across Hyderabad. These fruits are suspected to have been artificially ripened using ethylene and calcium carbide, both of which can pose health risks when misused.
Samples of the seized mangoes have been sent for laboratory testing to determine the extent of chemical usage and ensure consumer safety.
🧪 Health Concerns Over Artificial Ripening
While ethylene is considered safer when used within prescribed limits, excessive use or the use of banned substances like calcium carbide can lead to serious health issues, including respiratory problems and chemical contamination.
👮 Ongoing Vigilance
Authorities have stated that such inspections will continue throughout the mango season to prevent food adulteration and protect public health.
